Green is in at York

For the last 2 years, since York Fabrica installed a water recycling unit, we have reduced our water consumption by over 35%. For those who have visited a modern stone fabrication facility they would know that a huge amount of water is used when cutting and polishing. In our shop, we use water on our Water jet, CNC machines, bridge saws, and polishing machines along with any other tool that requires water in the shop when profiling and polishing by hand.

The water is captured in a series of floor channels that lead to a collection tank where the finely ground stone particles are filtered out.

The water is then sent back to be used by specific tools that can use water that is not completely clear, such as our bridge saws. The particulate that has been filtered out is contained in a large tank that is purged several times a week.

That heavily silted water is pumped into a small tank that mixes it into a thin slurry that then gets pumped into a fine filtering mesh that squeezes out the remaining water that runs clear to be reused.

These filters then separate and drop the silt which is now the consistency of clay into a container for removal to a clean land fill site.

Without this system, the municipal water system would be filtering out all this material and due to toxic contamination from other sources, they must then put it into land fill sites that are designed for potentially toxic materials such as the sites used to dump our household garbage.

We are proud of our gains in reducing our water consumption and taking the strain off the municipal waste recovery system which saves our city the cost of doing this and we are helping to reduce our consumption of life-giving water. We continue to fine tune our system to be able to divert more reused water to allowable areas of operation with the target of reaching a 50% reduction within the next two years.
